INVITATION: Foreigners living in Lithuania are invited to tell what Lithuania means to them

2014-03-06

ETHNIC KITCHEN IN LITHUANIA, the public launch of a national campaign against xenophobia, racism, sexism, and ageism in Lithuania will take place in Vilnius on March 8th.

Please, bring an object which represents Lithuania to you and take a part in our special photo session WHAT LITHUANIA IS TO ME. We hope that this playful and thought-provoking activity will strengthen intercultural dialog and mutual understanding among migrants and local population of Lithuania.

You will also be treated to an exlusive presentation of “Paris of my Dreams”, a brand new work by Uzbek Lithuanian composer Nailia Galiamova who will personally join our event with two of her collaborators: pianist Egle Andrejevaite and soprano Viktorija Miskunaite. In addition, one of the heroines of documentary feature Ethnic Kitchen, American performer and director Alicia Gian, will prepare a special number in Lithuanian for us.

You will also be able to meet other heroines of the film and learn more about their lives and work in Lithuania. Professional cook from Uruguay Marisa Leonaviciene will give us a short cooking lesson. Head of Roma Integration Center Bozena Karveliene will present to us a collection of authentic Romany costumes and souvenirs. Jordana Gonzales from Costa Rica will teach us a few phrases in Spanish. Head of the Baltic Chechenians Association Aminat Saiyeva will talk about the current situation in her homeland.

ETHNIC KITCHEN IN LITHUANIA will take place at the Artoteka (Strazdelio Str. 1, near the “Tamsta” club, Vilnius) at 1 pm on March 8, 2014. Free admission.

Ethnic Kitchen is a documentary feature about five women who moved to Lithuania from different countries, at different times, and for different reasons. At first glance, the life stories of these women seem unbelievable, but a closer look reveals that it is something that could happen to any of us. How do we construct our world which we call home? Does it stem from our place in society based on our gender, skin color, age, or nationality? Or is it something more simple than that? Could it be that home is any place where we find compassion, inspiration, talent, love, and a shared humanity? Ethnic Kitchen will be screened in fifteen Lithuanian towns. Each screening will be accompanied by a public discussion among local municipalities, NGOs and communities. Ethnic Kitchen is not just a movie, it’s an invitation to reflect on the things that make us feel like outsiders. It is is a reminder and encouragement to extend a helping hand to those around us having trouble fitting in. The project is made possible by the European Economic Area Grants NGO Program Lithuania.
